A differential temperature controller in a boiler system works by comparing the current temperature to a desired setpoint temperature, applying a user-adjustable differential, and adjusting the heat input to the boiler to keep the temperature within the specified range. This control system helps ensure efficient and safe boiler operation. Here's how it works:

Sensing: The controller typically uses two temperature sensors, one to measure the current temperature of the water or steam inside the boiler and another to measure the desired setpoint temperature. These sensors are strategically placed in the boiler system.

Comparison: The controller continuously compares the actual temperature (measured by the first sensor) with the desired setpoint temperature (measured by the second sensor).

Differential Adjustment: The "differential" in a differential temperature controller refers to the temperature difference (or range) between the setpoint and the current temperature. This differential is often adjustable, allowing for fine-tuning of the control system. For example, if the setpoint temperature is 180°F, and the differential is set to 10°F, the controller will aim to keep the boiler's temperature between 175°F and 185°F.

Control Action: Based on the temperature comparison and the set differential, the controller takes appropriate control actions to maintain the desired temperature range. It does this by regulating the heat source, such as a burner or electric heating element, to either increase or decrease the heat input into the boiler.

If the current temperature falls below the lower limit of the temperature range (e.g., 175°F in our example), the controller will increase the heat input by turning on the burner or increasing its intensity.

If the current temperature rises above the upper limit of the range (e.g., 185°F in our example), the controller will reduce or turn off the heat source.
